Glory to God Alone – Revelation 5:13
Revelation 5:12-13
In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!"
In the work that God carries out, one point is always central: every action or decision is for the glory of God, and results in extolling of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
God says: “…my glory I will not give to another.” (Isaiah 42:8). The Scriptures teach that it pleases God the Father to see His son exalted. God sent the Holy Spirit to glorify the Son (John 6:14). The Father gave Jesus “the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2:9-11). God’s glory increases when the Church submits to Jesus Christ’s lordship.
The Apostles clearly grasped this point. They never accepted glory from men. When Peter and John were at the Temple, and the lame man received a complete healing, told the excited crowd, “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? . . . The God of Abraham…glorified His Servant Jesus.” (Acts 3:13-16).
This should still be the attitude of God’s servants today. They cannot and should not announce their own name, nor accept advertisement of their names as great characters of faith. They should point to Jesus (“This is the Lamb of God”), demonstrating with their behavior the same attitude that was in John the Baptist: “He should increase, but I should decrease.” (John 3:30).
The Lord never wants us to proclaim the names of “great servants of God” – be they preachers, prophets, singers or musicians – for, after having done all that was ordained to us, “We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do." (Luke 17:10).
The biblical doctrine of the church as Christ’s Body, when we put it into practice, requires that we avoid the exaltation of men. In the Body, although there are many members, and each one of them has a profitable function for the edification of the Body, the Lord uses every member. If God uses a particular person a lot, he should not be “in evidence,” or putting himself in the spotlight. The Lord uses many people, so we should not become puffed up with pride or pleased with ourselves.
The same happens among pastors and preachers. There is no reason for any pastor to exalt himself or to be exalted. Any pastor should have the anointing of the Holy Spirit and will be God’s instrument – be it in preaching, in shepherding, or in the operation of healings and signs. The Lord wants to make every faithful church effective and productive.
The Word of God teaches that everyone needs the other members of the Body (see 1 Corinthians 12), and no pastor has all the fivefold ministries (apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, teacher). This biblical fact forces every pastor to live in fellowship with one another, so that their churches will receive the benefit from the other minis
